This is the speech given by the new Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Building at the 2021 AGM.

PROTOCOL

All thanks to the Almighty God for His benevolence towards Gateway Builders: the NIOB Ogun State chapter. I specially want to appreciate the immediate past executives for their tremendous achievements in the past two years.

In this administration, there is no other templates other than those set by the immediate past house at both national and state levels but with a focus on achieving more feats.

One of the major challenges of building profession that has been carefully addressed in the past is the expanded quackery, unlike other professions in the building industry. Quackery, in itself, is not limited to the likes of tradesmen taking the roles of builders on site but also in cases where another professionals in the built-environment assume the roles of a builders without being properly informed and certified to do so.

Also, the lack of information on the benefits of being a registered builder amongst the upcoming builders’ generation has dragged the progress of the NIOB in the industry.

The importance of the use of more sophisticated information technology to reach out to more audience in the building occupation in Ogun state; to create more awareness on the need to get professional indoctrination and certification shall be greatly encouraged. This also will make provision for ease of access to personal registration platforms for individuals at different cadres similar to the national.

While we focus on bringing in our people in the field into the professional forum we shall also work to expand the empowerment capacity of the state chapter using all available human resources to re-tutor, re-train, re-facilitate and re-build the working system. Here, it is important to note that everybody must play one role or the other as a member of the Ogun state NIOB to ensure we bring the building profession to stardoms in the state. For some of us that are in the political terrain, we shall be needing you more to introduce more standard practices to both state and local governments. For those in the academics, we will be needing you to do more for us so that we can have more access to the students.

Amongst other challenges of the building profession is

  1. Lack of adequate enforcements from the quarters of government and various individuals in the built-environment.
  2. Compromise being reached by government officials and individuals on the platform of corruption; the history of recent collapsed 21-storey building at Ikoyi should get us all alerted to change the course of the tide.

These two challenges should be addressed from the roots: government should be clustered with professional proposals from our enclaves. This we shall do together!

I want to use this opportunity to congratulate us and the entire national body of NIOB on the Investiture of the 21st President, Bldr. Prof. Yohana Daniel Izam FNIOB, JP.which took place November 27, 2021 in Abuja. In his address, Bldr. Prof. Yohana has recommended, in part, the following:

  1. Two National Conferences to target housing delivery issues.
  • Regulations, Institutions & Practices in the Nigerian Housing Sector (2022)
  • Concrete Conference & Exhibition (2023)
  1. Two National Workshops
  • Building Regulations in Nigeria (2022)
  • Industrialized Construction Techniques (2023)

I want to encourage us to start working toward very active participations at the National level through submission of papers for presentations regarding the above events.
